Md Ajwad Akil

I am a PhD student in the Department of Computer Science in Purdue University. I Started my PhD journey in Fall 2023. Currently I am working under supervision of Professor Elisa Bertino. Prior to this, I received my Bachelors (B.sc) from Department of Computer Science and Engineering with Honors from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. During my bachelors, I worked in CSE BUET NLP LAB under the supervision of Professor Rifat Shahriyar.

My current research is at the intersection of malware and software security and Generative AI, with a strong focus on LLM. I am intrigued by the challenge of combining classical software security and LLM and generative AI. I am also exploring about LLM security and defense and also ability of code LM to reason and work with systems and low level languages. Besides I am also engaged in static-analysis and vulnerability based research, particularly taint analysis. My research interests can be broadly categorized as:

  • MALWARE AND ADVERSARIAL MACHINE LEARNING
  • APPLICATION OF LLM, CODE LM AND GENERATIVE AI FOR SECURITY
  • STATIC ANALYSIS AND VULNERABILITY BASED RESEARCH
  • SECURITY OF LLMs, AGENTS AND RELATED AI SYSTEMS
  • REASONING ABILITY OF CODE LM AND GENERAL APPLICATION TO SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

Apart from academic activities, I like to keep my life as diverse as possible. I enjoy travelling and wish to travel to all iconic places in the world!. I enjoy a good book time to time, I game a lot and like to dive deep into things that I find fascinating, ranging from nordic mythology to the roots and connections of various tonal languages.

Work Experience

...
Lecturer, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, United International University
July 2022 - July 2023

I have worked as a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science. I have worked as both theory and lab instructor by teaching both theoretical and hands-on classes, organizing competitions and supervising student projects.

...
Intern, Machine Learning Engineer, Intelligent Machines Limited
July 2021 - June 2022

Worked extensively on enterprise AI project with real world data that tackles important business needs. I worked mainly with speech and image data modalities. For the speech project, worked to develop a sound event detection system leveraging pretrained models and contributed to different parts of the pipeline(noise removal techniques exploration, data processing etc). I Also worked on various Image processing-based projects where I was a part of teams to develop custom ID card detector, facial recognition detector as well as financial statement parsing by leveraging exisiting deep learning models and customising according to business needs. I learned to develop pre and post processing of real world image data and came to know the challenges and limitations first hand and also picked up some basic skills about ML in production, it's pipeline and challenges. In the Last days of my internships, I worked with the famous ELK stack to develop custom visualization for internal usage of the company.
